WEYMOUTH WATERSPORTS
& FITNESS CLUB

Come and join us in the world’s greatest playground - the ocean. We’re passionate about the sea and want to help you get out on the water and enjoy it.

We offer a range of watersports, including stand up paddleboarding (SUP), kayaking and windsurfing, all in the safety of Portland Harbour, a beautiful stretch of water that’s accessible in most conditions. Our fully qualified and experienced instructors are here to help you try something new, and we offer equipment hire if you want to do your own thing.

Our SUPerfit gym will help you become fitter, faster and stronger, whether that’s to help you improve at your chosen watersport, or for another personal fitness goal. The classes we run are designed to push you to your limit in a way that’s safe for your body.

We love to meet other people with a passion for the sea, so come down and have a chat. We can recommend the best ways to explore the Jurassic Coast, organise kayak or SUP tours, arrange watersports lessons and help you make the most of this beautiful corner of Dorset.

Stand Up Paddleboarding

Our Events

Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) has become incredibly popular in recent years - and we love it. We’ve been offering SUP lessons and tours for many years, making us one of the most experienced SUP centres on the Jurassic Coast.

SUP instruction

We have a great team of ASI-qualified instructors, who are here to help you get out on the water for the first time, or hone your existing SUP skills. We want you to love SUP just as much as we do, so our sessions are designed to help you progress, not just to get the basics (although we’ll make sure you’ve got those too!).

As you progress, we can help you explore other aspects of the sport, including SUP racing, SUP surfing and SUP downwinding - we’ll even introduce you to SUP polo. We’re in one of the UK’s top spots for downwind paddling, so there’s nowhere better to experience the thrill of a downwinder for the first time. We also offer a range of ASI-accredited SUP courses.

We offer private and group lessons, running regular group classes throughout the week and at the weekends. These group classes are divided into adult beginner, adult improver/progressor and children’s. Check our class timetable to see what’s coming up and the prices for each session.

Our season doesn’t finish when winter sets in either, as we have access to a local swimming pool where we run group SUP sessions during the winter.

SUP tours

If you want to discover the Jurassic Coast on a board, our SUP safaris up the Fleet lagoon and around Portland Harbour are perfect. The Fleet is a particularly great place for a paddle, as it’s calm, sheltered and home to a variety of wildlife, including hares, terns and otters, that you can observe from your board.

Around the harbour there are some fascinating sights, including Sandsfoot Castle and a former submarine testing centre.

If you just want to go for a chilled out paddle, you can hire all the equipment you need and explore at your own pace. Take a look at our tour and hire prices.

SUP yoga

For true relaxation on the water, you can’t beat a SUP yoga session. Sarah, our experienced SUP yoga instructor, will take you through a series of basic postures on your board. The extra balance this requires is great for strengthening and toning your muscles, bringing a new dimension to your practice.

Thanks to our location, we’re able to run these sessions outdoors throughout the summer and we have access to a local swimming pool during the winter. Take a look at our class timetable to see when we’re running SUP Yoga and to check prices.

SUP fitness

Simply being out on a SUP is a great full-body workout, but with a bit of effort you can get some real health and fitness benefits from a session. Alongside our SUPerFit gym, we offer regular SUP bootcamps where you’ll use your board for exercise. With the gym onsite, if the weather isn’t suitable, there’s always an alternative, and we’ll focus on building strength and honing your technique for paddling, even when we’re not on the water. Take a look at our class timetable to check times and prices.

WeySUP

Our passion for SUP extends beyond offering lessons and tours. We’ve established WeySUP - a SUP club that organises regular paddles and social events to help you meet other water lovers and enjoy the sport.

You can join club paddles or use the group to find company on SUP tours you’re planning yourself. Join our group on Facebook to find out what’s going on.

SUP instructor training

We are an accredited ASI Instructor Training Centre and offer SUP instructor courses throughout the year. Through us, you can qualify as a Level 1 and Level 2 ASI Instructor, as well as take your SUP Instructor Water Rescue course. Dates of forthcoming instructor workshops are listed on the ASI website and you need to book your place through ASI.

Kayak

Ever wanted to discover the Jurassic Coast from the water? A leisurely kayak tour is the best way to go - paddle at your own pace, enjoy the tranquility of your surroundings and admire the stunning Dorset scenery.

We have BCU-qualified instructors and guides who are on hand to help whether you’re getting used to a kayak for the first time or want a knowledgeable local guide to help you navigate the waters around the Fleet, Portland and its harbour.

We offer everything from beginner kayak instruction through to advanced paddling techniques in single and double kayaks.

Don’t want a lesson? No problem - we hire out our kayaks and also run kayak safaris to show you some of our beautiful local coastline, all part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that is the Jurassic Coast. Chesil Beach and the Fleet lagoon - a narrow channel of water that runs between the pebble beach and the mainland - is a unique geological feature home to varied wildlife, and one that’s best explored from the water.

Motorised craft are discouraged from entering this peaceful strip of water, making a kayak the ideal way to travel if you want to see the nesting terns, colony of hares or other stunning wildlife at close quarters.

We hire our single and double kayaks, as well as running tours and providing tuition. Check our price list to see all the options, or come and chat to us if you’d like to know more about organising a kayak safari and we can provide you with a customised itinerary and price.

Windsurf

Portland Harbour is one of the best places in the country for windsurfing, with the relatively shallow water close to shore perfect for beginners, while the deeper water further out is a great place for improvers to hone their skills and practice their tricks.

And as the venue for the 2012 Olympic windsurfing events, our waters truly are world-class for windsurfing.

If you want to try the sport for the first time, we offer private tuition with experienced instructors, ensuring you’re safe and comfortable while learning to harness the power of the wind.

If you’re a confident windsurfer, you can hire a full rig from us and enjoy the feeling of gliding across the water, with Portland on one side, Weymouth on the other and Chesil Beach running alongside you.

Take a look at our price list to find out more about hiring a windsurfing rig or booking lessons.

ASI Courses

We are the only ASI Stand Up Paddle Instructor Training Centre on the Jurassic Coast, offering a range of ASI courses from beginner through to instructor level.

The Academy of Surfing Instructors (ASI) is the world’s leading professional membership organisation in the adventure sports industry, specialising in surfing, SUP and bodyboarding. ASI accreditation means the centre meets the highest international standards when it comes to safety, teaching and operational responsibilities.

Our ASI courses

We offer a number of ASI courses in stand up paddleboarding to help you get started and progress within the sport.

Instructor courses

As an accredited ASI Instructor Training Centre, we are able to run a number of SUP instructor workshops throughout the year. These are:

  • Up Paddle Instructor Water Safety Rescue Award - An essential component of the ASI instructor training programme that teaches you to perform simple SUP rescues in enclosed flat water, exposed water and beginner surf locations.

  • Level 1 Stand Up Paddle Instructor (Enclosed Flat Water) - This is the first step towards working as a SUP instructor, ensuring you can safely instruct groups in enclosed flat water locations, teaching students the basic skills required for effective stand up paddling, as well as helping them progress.

  • Level 2 Stand Up Paddle Instructor (Exposed Waters) - Following on from the Level 1 course, this qualification covers the additional things you need to consider to teach in exposed water locations, such as harbours and large inland lakes, where there may be swell but no breaking waves.

You need to book your instructor training courses through ASI and will find full details ofupcoming dates on their website
